Tawin Hanprab forced to settle for silver

Thailand’s Tawin Hanprab has taken silver in the men’s 58kg taekwondo after losing the gold medal match 6-4 to Shuai Zhao of China.

Tawin headed into the fight looking to overcome a substantial height difference, and he was on the back foot as Zhao looked to get some early points on the board.

The difference in reach meant that Tawin was forced to come in close to attack and he paid the price with Zhao landing multiple strikes to take a 3-0 lead after the first round.

Zhao defended well as Tawin looked to get back into the fight, with the three-point lead remaining at the end of the second round.

In a matter of seconds it was 5-4 though, with a great head kick from Tawin scoring three points.

Down 4-6 heading into the final round, Tawin looked to be aggressive in the closing stages, but fatigue began to kick in and the 18-year-old could not land the strikes that would bring him back into the contest.
