Thailand shuttler Porntip Buranaprasertsuk saw her Olympic campaign come to an end on Tuesday as she was beaten 12-21, 17-21 by defending women’s singles champion Li Xuerui of China.
Porntip was Thailand’s last hope of winning a medal in badminton as fourth seed Ratchanok Intanon failed to make it past the round of 16 on Monday as she was beaten by Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.
Porntip had looked in impressive form in the lead-up to the quarter-finals, but she struggled against Li, who outplayed her and took one step closer to retaining her gold medal.
Li will face World number one Carolina Marin in the semi-finals after the Spaniard downed South Korea’s Hyun Ji Sung 21-12, 21-16.
Meanwhile, PV Sindhu took one step closer to becoming the first Indian shuttler to win a gold medal at the Olympics as she defeated China’s Wang Yihan 22-20, 21-19.
Sindhu will take on Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-finals after she came from behind to defeat compatriot Akane Yamaguchi 11-21, 21-17, 21-10.
