Sweden shock the Canarinhas

Sweden women's national football team shocked hosts Brazil as they won 4-3 on penalties at the Maracanã Stadium after a 0-0 draw to advance to the final of the tournament.

The Canarinhas were one match away from having chance to win their first ever gold medal having finished as runners up on two separate occasions – in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 – and despite dominating most of the game in regulation time, the Brazilians failed to find a way past the imposing Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.

Both sides attacked with purpose during extra-time with the tactical awareness and defensive organisation of the away side shining through and it always seemed likely that they would triumph with less pressure on their shoulders.

The win against the USA in the quarter-finals and now the scalp of Vadao's side make the Europeans clear favorites for the gold medal where they will meet Germany or Canada on Friday.
