The men’s 20km race walk was won by China’s Wang Zhen at the Olympics on Friday, while Vietnam’ Thanh Ngung Nguyen finished well down the field.
Nguyen could only cross the line in 60th place with a time of 1:30.01, although he can still be proud of qualifying for the Olympic final.
Britain’s Tom Bosworth led for much of the race but he faded towards the close and would finish sixth as the Chinese pair of Zhen Wang and Zelin Cai came into their own in the final stretch to finish in the gold and silver medal positions respectively.
Wang recorded a time of 1h19min14secs while Cai recorded a personal best finishing just 12 seconds behind his compatriot.
Australian Dane Bird-Smith would match the efforts of Tallent in 2008 as he won the bronze and Brazil’s Caio Bonfim recorded a new Brazilian record time to finish fourth.
