Vietnamese fencer Vũ Thành An was beaten by France’s Vincent Anstett in the men’s individual sabre fencing round of 16 at the Olympics on Wednesday.
Vũ, who was given the honour of holding the flag for Vietnam at the Olympic opening ceremony, was successful in his opening match of the day, defeating Italy’s Diego Occhiuzzi 15-12 to make it through to the last 16.
But in the following round he could not get past Anstett, a former gold medallist with Team France at the World Fencing Championships.
The Frenchman won 15-8 to advance to the quarter-finals, where he will face Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini.
The gold medal in the event will be awarded later this evening.
