According to Motorsport.com, the Manor team have applied for a super licence for the Spanish driver.
Last year, the 23-year-old Merhi took part in FP1 for Caterham at Monza, Sochi and Suzuka but was only licensed to drive at those tracks on a Friday.
Merhi is a decent driver having won the Euro F3 title in 2011, before moving to the DTM. He was third in last year's Renault series.
There is no clarity on whether Merhi is giving up the Renault 3.5 seat to focus on Manor for the upcoming F1 season.
The Renault series does not kick-off until April 25-26.
