Barbera pips Marquez in German MotoGP FP2

Avintia Ducati rider Hector Barbera shocked all by going quickest in the second MotoGP practice session at a wet Sachsenring on Friday afternoon.

Since the Sachsenring has been resurfaced for 2017 there has been little testing at the track, so there were a lot of unknowns to contend with for all the riders and teams.

By the end of the session, Barbera emerged just 0.063s ahead of Honda Team Honda Marc Marquez, with Dani Pedrosa following three tenths behind.

The start of proceedings was preceded by a short, sharp shower, and Marquez was one of the few riders to get lap in on a drying track before the rain returned again with more force.

The Spaniard led for most of the session, but as the track dried towards the end, several riders were able to improve on his early time.

Marquez would eventually improve too, but it was Barbera’s late flyer that ended up being the fastest.

Coming in fourth was Pramac Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci, followed by Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) in fifth and Cal Crutchlow on his LCR Honda in sixth.

Closing out the top 10 was current MotoGP championship leader Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Sam Lowes (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) and Ducati’s Jorge Lorenzo.

Movistar Yamaha duo of Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales finished a lowly 15th and 20th place respectively.
