Honda duo fastest in FP3 as Yamahas miss out

Marc Marquez topped the timesheets in third practice for the Catalunya GP, but Yamaha duo Maverick Vinales and Valentino Rossi both missed out on automatic Q2 spots.

The new chicane introduced for this year's race was removed overnight following criticism from the riders, meaning Friday's practice session times were all effectively wiped out.

Only Saturday's morning session would determine the 10 riders progressing directly into Q2, and that ended up costing both Vinales and Rossi, after they could only manage 13th and 15th place respectively.

Yamaha opted not to test at Barcelona with their rivals last month, leaving them well down on pace, and both Vinales and Rossi will now have to contest the first phase of qualifying.

Marquez and team-mate Dani Pedrosa managed to boss the times, with the former shrugging off an early crash at Turn 10.

Heading back out on his second Honda, Marquez took over from Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro at the top with a 1m45.087s.

Vinales was initially competitive, trailing Marquez by just 0.002 – although he failed to improve for the remainder of the session – and narrowly avoided going down himself.

The late-session shootout on soft tyres saw the lead change hands several times, with Aspar Ducati's Alvaro Bautista briefly in front before being beaten by Espargaro, whose time was further lowered by Pedrosa.

Entering the final minute of the session, Marquez got back on top with a 1m44.178s, which was not beaten.

He finished 0.101s clear of team-mate Pedrosa, with Bautista and Espargaro following in third and fourth.

Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo rounded out the top six, followed by Suzuki's Andrea Iannone.

Pramac Ducati pair Scott Redding and Danilo Petrucci and Avintia Ducati's Hector Barbera completed the top 10.
