Marquez quickest in Austin after late flyer

Reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez returned to the top the timesheets for Repsol Honda in Friday's second practice session at the Americas MotoGP.

Yamaha's Maverick Vinales dominated FP1 earlier in the day and he looked set for more of the same in the afternoon.

The Spaniard led the way after pipping early pace setter Marquez midway through the second session, but with time running out, Marquez and French rookie Johann Zarco both produced flying laps to relegate Vinales to third.

The reason for that was the riders all fitting soft front and rear tyres toward the end of the session, which led to improved times.

Vinales did not make the change, so he will be more than happy with being fastest before the new rubber came on.

Marquez final lap of 2m04.061s was 0.286s ahead of Zarco, who continued to impress for Yamaha Tech 3, and 0.390s ahead of Vinales.

Rossi also produced a late burst on the soft tyres to lift himself up to fourth overall, a little over a tenth ahead of Dani Pedrosa.

Andrea Dovizioso was sixth as the fastest Ducati, while Cal Crutchlow led the Hondas in seventh.

Zarco's team-mate Jonas Folger was eighth, followed by Scott Redding and Andrea Iannone, who rounded out the top 10.
