Fernando Alonso described Stoffel Vandoorne’s horror weekend at the Bahrain Grand Prix as “amazing” after the Belgian failed to start.
Vandoorne was due to start from P17 in Sakhir, but a fresh problem with the MCL32 was discovered on the way to grid and prevented the Belgian from even lining up for lights out.
“Amazing,” Alonso said when asked about Vandoorne’s failure to start. “Amazing, you know, because we’ve been working very hard, and Stoffel is working very hard.
“This weekend he had so much bad luck with power unit changes, and then not even to participate…
“You can be fast, slow, at times, in different races, in different circumstances. When you cannot even start the race, it's amazing.”
McLaren later confirmed that it was a water pressure issue that wrecked all chance of Vandoorne starting on Sunday.
