Rea pips Melandri in FP2 at Aragon

Jonathan Rea produced a blistering final lap to pip Marco Melandri and retain his spot on the top of the timesheets in Friday's second practice session at at MotorLand Aragon.

The reigning WSBK world champion put in a 1’50.062 lap at the very end of the session to equal his showing from FP1 earlier in the day.

That left Melandri ( Racing – Ducati) in second and Rea's Kawasaki Racing team-mate Tom Sykes in third.

It was business as usual for Rea, who has started the season perfectly with four wins from four races  and two superpoles to his name already.

Not even a late shower in the session could prevent Rea from reclaiming top spot. With drops of rain being reported in all sectors, he was still able to head out and get the job done with his last lap of the session, pipping Melandri's leading time by one-tenth.

Sykes also improved late in the day to grab third, while Chaz Davies ( Racing – Ducati) was able to recover from a terrible FP1 in which he recorded just two timed laps, putting in 21 laps in total to finish fourth, 0.321s off leader Rea.

Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) completed the top five, with Spaniards Xavi Fores (BARNI Racing Team) and Jordi Torres (Althea BMW Racing Team) following in sixth and seventh respectively.

Lowes' team-mate Michael van der Mark placed eighth, followed by Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) and Leandro Mercado (IODARacing) to round out the top ten.

It was another trying day for Leon Camier on the MV Augusta as he had to settle for P18 after not being able to get in much track time.
