Bayliss breaks leg at Sacramento Mile

The Australian, who made a surprise return to SBK earlier this year to compete in two races for the Aruba.it Ducati team, took part in the Californian event, but was involved in a serious accident in the semi-final at the AMA Flat Track.

Riding on a Lloyd Brothers Ducati bike, he crashed at Turn 3 and was sent into the protective fence and suffered a fractured fibula.

Bayliss, who won the SBK titles in 2001, 2006 and 2008, was in high spirits despite the accident, tweeting: "Well this was not in the plan , not sure what it is but foot was pointing wrong way , grabbed in air fence."

He later revealed that he is to return to Australia for surgery, adding: "Not so bad , leave for home today and get her welded up soon as I land."
