Maverick Vinales believes he could have gone even faster on the final day of MotoGP pre-season testing, despite being the quickest rider in the field.
The new Yamaha rider topped the timesheets during the last testing session in Sepang after he was marginally faster than fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez.
Vinales was delighted with his form, but predicted that he could have been even quicker if he had used soft tyres at the end of the session.
"The laptime was good. I think I could have improved quite a bit, but in terms of pace we are among the best and I'm really happy,” he said.
"I was on the hard tyre and maybe I pushed too hard and went wide, but I was already improving and maybe with the softs I could have improved more.
“In any case, the race is in Qatar so we'll have to give it all there."
Vinales moved to Yamaha from Suzuki at the end of last season, with new team-mate, Valentino Rossi, already predicting that the 22-year-old has to be considered a contender for the world title.
And Vinales admits that he is surprised by how swiftly he has found his feet at Yamaha.
"We've done a good job and I'm happy because I felt fast and especially in terms of race pace,” he added.
“I felt very focused, without any mistakes, so very happy.”
