Mahindra Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist produced a stunning lap to secure the Julius Baer Pole Position for Saturday afternoon's Marrakesh ePrix.
The Swede, who ran second fastest in the qualifying group stages, recorded a lap of 1:21.509 to lead the way, and when Techeetah's Jean-Eric Vergne, who had still to run, failed to leave the pit lane pole was confirmed for Rosenqvist
"It's absolutely fantastic," he said. "We knew in Hong Kong that we were quick and we took it to the next step here with pole. Sam [Bird] was quick so we had to push hard. The car has been quick all day so big thanks to the team for that."
Championship leader Sebastien Buemi was made to pay for an error at Turn 1 but recovered on the rest of his lap to join Rosenqvist on the front row.
Sam Bird had a huge crash in free practice two but dusted himself down brilliantly to snatch third spot, while Nelson Piquet Jr had a scrappy lap, but was happy to have made Super Pole and will start fourth on the grid.
Vergne, who was quickest in the group stages, seemed to be the subject of a mistake by his team after he was sent out too late to record a time and he will start fifth.
Daniel Abt will line-up sixth for Schaeffler, just ahead of Renault e.dams' Nico Prost.
Oliver Turvey will start eighth for NEXTEV ahead of the two Andretti drivers Robin Frijns and Antonio Felix da Costa.
