Massa lauds Alonso and Schumi as toughest team-mates

Ahead of his last ever Brazilian Grand Prix, retiring Felipe Massa has revealed that Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher has been his toughest team-mates in the sport since his debut in 2002.

Leaving Sauber for Ferrari in 2006, Massa was partnered with the great Schumacher before being joined by Kimi Raikkonen and eventually double World Champion Alonso.

Before being paired up with Alonso, the duo clashed on more than one occasion. Massa, though, said he and the Spaniard became friendly with one another once they were wearing the same Ferrari livery.

“Alonso always treated me well, we never had problems,” Massa said.

“But he was always nicer in front of me than behind.”

At their most recent encounter at the Mexican GP, Massa explained how the two endeared each other.

“He looked at me and he was awkward, and gave me hug. Then I looked at him and said, ‘You were a son of a bitch… but I like you.’ Then he started to laugh,” he said.

The Brazilian also expressed his admiration for his German team-mate at Ferrari.

“He was a huge influence in my career and a really good friend. I visited him when he was sleeping. It was not an easy thing,” he said.

On the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix, the Williams driver is looking forward to an ‘emotional’ race weekend.

“Interlagos is home. It’s the place that I grew up. It will be emotional racing there for the final time on such an amazing track,” said the 35-year-old.

“I’m looking forward to enjoying every lap and hopefully I can manage to finish the race with a good result.

“I have won twice at Interlagos and have finished on the podium many times and I hope we can get another one. It won’t be easy, but I will do everything I can for my people and for Brazil.”
