Vinales edges out Marquez in final Malaysia practice

Maverick Vinales edged out reigning world champion Marc Marquez in the final practice session at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

In the fastest of the three practice opportunities, Team Suzuki Ecstar rider Vinales triumphed in a time of 1m59.947s to pip Marquez by 0.085s.

Jorge Lorenzo had made the early running on his Movistar Yamaha as the first man to go close to the two minute bracket, with the Spaniard poised to take the top spot as the session entered the final 12 minutes.

But Marquez – back on the track after missing FP2 with gastroenteritis – fought back to go four tenths clear in a lap record pace.

Vinales then shot to the top though, while Lorenzo was left in third – just 0.01s behind Marquez – with Valentino Rossi and Hector Barbera completing the top five.

Cal Crutchlow was the biggest of the names confined to Q1 after falling on turn seven.
