Rea’s epic form continues in Misano

Race 1 winner Tom Sykes was again in flying form as he grabbed the wholeshot ahead of David Giugliano, Leon Haslam and Rea. But it was Chaz Davies who made the best start as he climbed from 11th on the grid to fifth through the first corner.

Determined not to let his team-mate race away, Rea was quick to attack Haslam and then began to hunt down the Ducati of Giugliano. Three laps in and the leading trio were bunched together, separated by just half a second as Giugliano had a look up the inside of Sykes while Rea did the same to the Italian.

Racing nose-to-stern, Giugliano made his move on lap 6 into Turn 3. Inch perfect, he took the lead ahead of Sykes which, three corners later, became ahead of Rea as the Ulsterman also dived up the inside of the former World Champion. A mistake a lap later cost Rea as he ran off the track and fell back to third place.

While Giugliano made the most of the battling Kawasakis to etch out a one second gap, Rea fought back to retake second and Davies, dragging Haslam along with him, joined the podium fight. The duo made short work of Sykes, relegating him from third to fifth in just two corners, while Rea pulled away to slowly close the gap to Giugliano.

With six to go Rea was right on Giugliano's rear wheel and it appeared to be only a matter of time before he made his move. That came at the fastest point of the Misano circuit as he used the slipstream to shoot past the Italian and up into the lead.

The Championship leader never looked back and raced to the win, his 11th of the season. He extended his lead in the Championship to 133 points over Sykes.

Giugliano held on to finish second while Haslam beat Davies to the final podium position.

Sykes was a disapopointing P5, crossing the line ahead of Max Biaggi, who was once again inside the top ten upon his WSBK return, Jordi Torres and Michele Pirro. Sylvain Guintoli and Michael van der Mark completed the top ten.
