Marquez edges final practice in Australia

World champion Marc Marquez edged the final practice session at the Australian Grand Prix after conditions caused havoc for several big MotoGP names.

After FP2 was cancelled due to torrential rain, FP3 was extended by 15 minutes at Phillip Island and it was Marquez who set the fastest time with a lap of 1m33.155s.

Marquez just pipped Australian Jack Miller by 0.054s, while Maverick Vinales, Valentino Rossi, Cal Crutchlow and Jorge Lorenzo were all condemned to compete in Q1.

On an initially dry surface, the field was swiftly faster than the time set by Crutchlow in FP1, with Marquez’s unbeaten lap coming on intermediate tires in the second half of the session.

But the combination of slicks, intermediates and wet tires led to a mixed bag of results as the drizzle began to fall.

Honda’s Miller initially set the bench-mark with a lap of 1m33.209s, just prior to being overtaken by Marquez.

Aleix Espargaro and brother Pol Espargaro finished third and fourth respectively after completing quick laps, just before the rain returned with 19 minutes to go.

But it was a miserable session for Vinales and Rossi, who finished in 11th and 12th spot, while Honda’s Crutchlow wound up in 15th spot.

Lorenzo finished in last place – 5.163s slower than Marquez – after changing to slicks just before the heavy rain returned.
