Piquet Jr takes surprise pole in Hong Kong

Nelson Piquet Junior secured a surprise pole position for the Hong Kong ePrix on Sunday after an incident packed qualifying session.

The Brazilian secured his maiden pole position ahead of teammate Oliver Turvey with a time of 1:03.099 as NextEV locked up the front row of the season’s first race.

Nico Prost was expected to take pole, but instead, it was Loic Duval who grabbed the top spot in Q1.

Several drivers were unhappy when the inside blue kerb was removed at the Turn 3 and 4 chicane as they had not been told.

Lucas di Grassi put himself out of qualifying and will start at the back of the grid after he hit the wall at the chicane during Q2.

Turvey then took over at the top when the session restarted, before teammate Piquet Jr bested him by a tenth of a second.

The red flag was then brought out for a second time after Robin Frijns slammed into a barrier at the same location as di Grassi and was narrowly missed by Jean-Eric Vergne.

The Super Pole was then cancelled because it had taken too long to repair the track after Frijns’ crash.
