Vinales: ‘This is one dream that came true’

Maverick Vinales admitted that it felt “incredible” after he won his maiden MotoGP race at the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

Vinales’ victory was the first for Suzuki since Chris Vermeulen triumphed at Le Mans in 2007 and the team’s first since returning to MotoGP last year after a three-year absence.

The 21-year-old was thrilled to have clinched his first MotoGP win just 30 races into his career and hopes that he can build on it in the six races remaining in the season.

“It feels incredible,” Vinales said. “For all the work to come through with a race like that. I could manage all the time, the lap times were so good. The team worked so much and I’m so grateful to them because I came to this weekend and I think I could win because I feel really great at Silverstone always and my bike was on a really good level. Today we did it. This is one dream that came true. I hope I can give to Suzuki more things like that.”

Vinales will leave Suzuki at the end of the ongoing season and join Movistar Yamaha, where he will race alongside Valentino Rossi.

The Spaniard admitted that he believed his first real chance of victory would come next season before adding that his victory was the perfect farewell gift to Suzuki.

“For sure, it is the best moment and also I didn’t think this year I could do it – I was just thinking on next year to try to do it,” he said. “Honestly, I’m so happy and to do it for the team before I leave Suzuki is one of the best things I could give to them.”

Vinales also insisted that his win at Silverstone on Sunday had not put any doubts in his mind about his decision to join Yamaha next season.

“Honestly I didn’t change my mind and when I make one decision I am 100 per-cent and we worked so hard on Friday to have one bike that conserved the tyre until the end and also in Brno we did one step in that way,” he said.

“Today I was feeling great and I was so confident on the front. We did a really good strategy with the electronics and the bike was keeping really good with the tyre and I hope it can continue even when the ground is hot.”
