Rio Haryanto has lamented the opening lap contact that cost him the chance to improve on his starting position in the European Grand Prix last weekend.
The Indonesian began in sixteenth on the grid in Baku, but a collision with Esteban Guitierrez’s Haas on the approach to the first corner forced him into a longer-than-usual pit-stop for repairs.
Haryanto went on to finish the race in eighteenth place, leaving him to rue the costly incident.
"I had contact in Turn One,” he said, “which damaged my front wing and I had to stop.
"Obviously a new one requires a longer pit stop, so I dropped back quite a bit.
"We decided to put the Soft tyre on at that point and stay on a one-stop strategy, but 49 laps was a long stint for that tyre and I was really struggling with high degradation; the breaking point was changing every lap.
"But, I think everyone was expecting some opportunities, so we had to try to put ourselves in a position to respond to them. In the end, [there were] no such opportunities; it was a very straightforward race."
The 2016 Formula One season continues in Austria on July 3.
