Melandri: I didn’t accept Yamaha’s Misano offer

Former Yamaha WSBK rider Marco Melandri confirms that he turned down the PATA Crescent Yamaha team when asked if he would be willing to race for them at Misano this weekend.

With Sylvain Guintoli unable to race due to an injury picked up at the Imola round, Yamaha approached Melandri and asked him if they could tempt him back to WSBK racing by replacing the injured Frenchman.

Melandri took to social media and tweeted that he had been approached by Yamaha but turned them down.

“I didn’t accept Yamaha offer for Misano only cause after eight months without a pro ride I could not think to jump on the bike and be strong,” he tweeted.

Guintoli has since been replaced by Superstock 1000 rider Niccolo Canepa, who will partner Alex Lowes at Misano, but Melandri added that he would be available for next event at Laguna Seca if needed, “With 3/4 days of test if Yamaha needs me for Laguna Seca I’ll be happy to ride”

The 33-year-old Melandri has 19 WSBK wins between 2011 and 2014 during his stints with Yamaha, BMW and Aprilia.
