Honda will run new turbo in Montreal

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will run updated turbos at this weekend’s Canadian GP after Honda obtained positive results on the dyno.

In the wake of the Monaco GP, a race where McLaren-Honda secured their second double points-haul of the campaign, Honda spoke of the possibility of updating their power unit ahead of Montreal.

Honda F1 chief Yusuke Hasegawa said at the time: “Some of the updates that we have run in Sakura on the dyno I have seen have good results. The thing we have to do is confirm that technology is OK and the durability and the logistics to prepare.”

With those boxes ticked, Honda will introduce the updated turbo in Canada this weekend.

The new turbo has cost the Japanese engine manufacturer two tokens and is reportedly focused on improving the harvesting efficiency of the power unit.

Both Alonso and Button are both expected to run the update, which will mean a third turbo for both McLaren drivers.
