It appears that it is only a matter of time before Nico Rosberg has a new Mercedes contract in hand after Toto Wolff said it is “under control.”
The German racer has been the star of this year’s show, claiming a hat-trick of grand prix victories to bring his tally up to six successive wins stretching back to last year’s Mexican GP.
As such Rosberg leads the Drivers’ Championship on 75 points, 36 ahead of his team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
But despite his incredible form Mercedes have yet to extend Rosberg’s contract, which expires at the end of this season.
“Maybe we should get in a hurry now with that kind of performance!” ESPN quotes motorsport boss Wolff as having said after Rosberg’s Chinese GP win.
He added: “A contract is always between two parties and it needs to pan out in the right way. It’s all under control.
“He’s been with the family for such a long time. He’s a very important pillar of the team and he performs well, so in my opinion there is nothing that speaks against him joining up again, but then obviously it comes down to the detail.
“Obviously that needs to be discussed at a certain stage, but I guess we feel – both sides feel – comfortable about it.”
