Valentino Rossi claimed a superb first win of 2016 with a near-perfect performance at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España on Sunday.
Rossi raced to an unchallenged victory, 2.386 seconds ahead of his Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo and seven seconds ahead of Marc Marquez who completed the podium.
The victory was Rossi’s 113th in his career and his 87th in the premier class.
However, what was special about Sunday was that it was the first time Rossi had led every lap of a premier class race from pole position to the finish.
“I think that this was the perfect weekend,” Rossi said.
“We started to go faster from Friday morning and we worked very well. The bike, in the race, was fantastic and we worked very well with the team so I have to say ‘thank you’ to the whole Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team, especially my crew.
“I had a good pace and a good start and felt good with the bike from the beginning, so I could push. Sincerely, it was a special taste to have a win like this, so thanks a lot!”
Rossi now sits third in the championship standings with 58 points. Lorenzo is in second with 65 points. Marquez leads with 82 points.
