Bahrain GP: FP1 as it happened

Keep up to date with all the action from the Bahrain GP, as first practice starts at Sakhir on Friday.

20:33 – And so we close close our coverage of the first practice session from Bahrain. Join us again in two hours or so for the second session.

20:33 – This is how the top 10 looked at the end of the session:

20:29 – They’ve left it a little late but the Ferraris have improved significantly right at the end of the session.

20:28 – Somewhat unsurprising, it is the Mercedes pair that are dominating the fastest sector times. A sign of things to come on Sunday?

20:24 – Sebastian Vettel has had a quite session for Ferrari so far, spending the least amount of time on the track.

20:19 – Somewhat surprisingly, it is Williams setting the pace through the speed trap. The Mercs, meanwhile, are on the soft tyres, the compound that they have chosen for the most number of sets.

20:17 – With 15 minutes or so left in the session, everybody is back on the track hoping to improve on their previous times.

20:10 – Both Mercs are back on track now but some of the F1 new boys have also gotten some key laps under their belts.

20:05 – Absolutely stunning shot of the track this:

20:01 – And the rest: 11 Vettel; 12 Grosjean; 13 Sainz; 14 Gutierrez; 15 Vandoorne; 16 Massa; 17 Nasr; 18 Palmer; 19 Ericsson; 20 Celis; 21 Haryanto; 22 Wehrlein

20:00 – With 30 minutes left in the session, this is what the top 10 looks like: 1 Rosberg; 2 Hamilton; 3 Ricciardo; 4 Kvyat; 5 Hulkenberg; 6 Button; 7 Magnussen; 7 Bottas; 8 Verstappen; 10 Raikkonen

19:56 – Merc continues to set the pace in FP1, but Renault are having quite a good little session so far as well.

19:51 – The Toro Rosso mechanics, meanwhile, are having a bit of a moment in the garage..

19:46 – Last time out in Australia Haas impressed with Romain Grosjean P6 on the day. So far today he is P9, 2.4s down. Gutierrez is P21.

19:41 – Most of the drivers are diving back into the pits after a stint of 10 laps or so. Jenson Button, meanwhile, has a little moment…

19:37 – After 30 minutes on the track, this is what the provisional classification looks like.

19:33 – Who said F1 of today isn’t fast enough?

19:28 – Nico Rosberg has seemingly started where he left off in Australia and has set the early pace with a blistering lap. The German is on song!

19:24 – The action is starting to hot up nicely now, with all the cars on the track.

19:20 – Lewis Hamilton heads out so we have two Mercs out on track and it appears as if both are going to get straight down to work instead of just putting in an installation lap.

19:18 – Mercedes have taken their time but finally the World Champions are putting their proverbial toes in the water.

19:13 – In case you missed Thursday’s huge news: Fernando Alonso is out of the grand prix and will be subbed by Stoffel Vandoorne. Alonso failed to pass the FIA’s medical yesterday as he has yet to heal from the rib fractures he suffered in his horrific Melbourne crash. The Spaniard may also have to sit out the Chinese GP but will have a test on the Thursday of that race weekend to determine his fitness. Best of luck to both Fernando and Stoffel!

19:08 – Not much action on the track at this stage, so Kevin Magnussen has decided to use the time on a practice pit stop.

19:03 The green light is on and we are a go in Bahrain. Renault the first team to hit the track.

18:58 All the drivers are doing their final preparations before hitting the track for the first time. Not long before we are a go

18:53 – Welcome to our coverage of the first practice session from the Bahrain GP.
