Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen is not overly perturbed by the performance of the Mercedes vehicle during testing in Barcelona this week.
Mercedes proved to be incredibly reliable throughout the process, completing more laps than any of the other teams, without showing any sign of vulnerability. However, Raikkonen thinks too much is being read into those particular statistics at this stage of the season.
“No, why should I be worried? It’s something that a lot of people do,” said Raikkonen, responding directly to questions about Ferrari’s mileage covered this week.
“We do our own stuff. Obviously we would have liked to have a bit more laps as I lost a day out of two, but that’s a part of testing,” added the Finn.
Raikkonen said the primary objective for most teams at this stage of the season was address any concerns that might still exist ahead of the first Grand Prix for the season. In that regard, he was satisfied with what Ferrari came to do, although he is no clearer on just how significant a challenge his team will launch when the campaign gets under way.
“We are getting ready for the races and if there’s some issues or things to try, we do it here. I don’t know if the car is going to be good enough. The car feels nice and obviously we have a lot of other things to still try and test and tune,” added Raikkonen.
“It’s definitely a step up from what we had last year, but is it going to be good enough? We’ll see at the end of this year.”
