Reigning MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has admitted he couldn’t have hoped for more after dominating this week’s pre-season test at Sepang.
The Movistar Yamaha rider was by far the quickest on all three days of testing, and was the only man to break the two-minute mark on Wednesday, posting a best lap of 1:59.580 which was 0.976s quicker than the time of his team-mate, Valentino Rossi, who was second fastest.
Speaking after the conclusion of the test, Lorenzo said that his performance was dream-like, with all aspects of his bike coming together well.
“Maybe in a dream, you can imagine that you can end with a one-second advantage and 1.3s to the third rider [Marquez] and today it was possible,” Lorenzo said.
“It was a combination of things. I think Yamaha has probably a very complete bike that with the Bridgestone we couldn’t take profit of the potential and now with the Michelin tyres we can take.”
However, the three-time World Champion certainly won’t be resting on his laurels, mindful that his performance will only motivate his rivals further.
“Obviously the competition doesn’t sleep,” he said. “A lot of Ducati riders are very fast and the Honda will arrive. So today we can say that we cannot start any better, but it’s obvious it’s only one track. We have to go to Phillip island and Qatar before the first race.
“So it’s better to have your feet on the ground and from my experience everything can change so quickly in the motorcycle world. One day you are so strong and the next you are having some problem.”
The riders head to Phillip Island next for a test from February 17-19 before the season gets underway in Qatar on March 20.
