Dovizioso worried about Marquez’s speed

Andrea Dovizioso won the 2018 MotoGP season opening race in Qatar on Sunday however the Italian is concerned about the pace of his rival Marc Marquez who crossed the line in second.

Ducati’s Dovizioso has a good record at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar. Prior to Sunday’s victory he had finished second there on three consecutive occasions.

On the contrary, Marquez and his Honda team have struggled at the same venue in the past with fifth place, third place and fourth place finishes in 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively.

On Sunday though, the Spaniard very nearly upset the apple cart after his overtaking move on Dovizioso on the final corner of the final lap just failed and he had to settle for second.

Speaking after the race, Ducati MotoGP team manager Davide Tardozzi admitted that Dovizioso was concerned at how close the race, especially considering it was at one of his favourite venues and one of Marquez’s worst.

“Dovi is worried about Marc,” Tardozzi said.

“Because this is a track more for Ducati and not for Honda, but Marc was there [in the victory fight].

“Then I said ‘he is world champion and he demonstrated today, too’.

“All the respect from Dovi to Marc because he knows that he [Marquez] is the guy to beat.”

The MotoGP season continues on the eighth of April in Argentina – a venue where Marquez, the 2018 champion, reigned supreme last year.
