Anna Nordqvist had reason to feel frustrated on Sunday. A two-shot penalty at the second play-off hole at the Women’s U.S. Open saw her chances of victory take a tumble, allowing Brittany Lang to claim victory.
The Swede was penalised after video footage emerged that she had accidentally ground her club in a bunker at the 17th.
The penalty was completely justified, but that Nordqvist was only told of the penalty after playing her third shot into the par-five 18th hole while Lang was notified prior to her third shot, allowing her to take a conservative approach, could have left something of a bitter taste.
However, Nordqvist has reacted to the incident with a great degree of class, taking responsibility for her mistake and congratulating Lang.
Thumbs up for a great US OPEN! Proud of myself for the way I played this week. It wasnt ment to happen. Its blowing 35-40mph out there and I had a 5 iron downhill lie in the bunker on 17. It was obviously not my intention to touch the sand but it happened and life will go on. congratulations to Brittany Lang for a great week of golf!! ? I dont want anyone to feel sorry for me, hey I just finished 2nd in the US Open. There will be plenty more opportunities in my career. Thanks everyone for the support!! ???
