Henderson triumphs at Meijer Classic

Canada’s Brooke Henderson claimed the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday, fending off the twin challenge of Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson to win by two shots.

The 19-year-old Henderson finished with a bogey-free final round of 66 on the Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The course had been reduced to a par of 69 for the final two rounds — the fifth hole played as a par 3 instead of a par 5 — due to flooding.

The win was Henderson’s fourth LPGA title and first since the Cambia Classic last July.

Wie shot a final round 65, while overnight leader Thompson shot a 69.

Henderson finished at 17-under par to claim the winner’s cheque of US$300,000.

Speaking after the win, Henderson said: "I had zero bogeys on a day like today where it was super windy. And any day on Sunday, there’s that little bit of extra pressure and you’re in contention so you want to play really well so you might push a few more shots than you would like."

Australia’s Su Oh (64), Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden (65) and Moriya Jutanugarn (66), the sister of world number one Ariya, tied for fourth at 14-under par. Ariya shot a 69 to finish 9 under.

World number two Lydia Ko fired a 68 to tie for 10th place at 12-under.
