McIlroy looks forward to break

After two victories in the last three weeks in the United States, McIlroy defends his BMW PGA Championship title at Wentworth before heading to his homeland to host the Irish Open next week.

The world No 1 will make time to visit new US Open venue Chambers Bay in Seattle as part of his preparations for the second major of the year, but he is not allowing himself to get too far ahead.

“My mind is focused on the next two weeks here and at the Irish Open,” said McIlroy at his press conference on the eve of the European Tour’s flagship event.

“I just want to try and finish off this stretch of golf as well as I can, and I get a couple of weeks off after that. Then I’ll start to think about the US Open and get ready for that.

“I’ll probably go and take a look at Chambers Bay a little bit ahead of time, but for now I just want to play as well as I can here and in Ireland, and then I’ll put my clubs away for a few days before turning my attention to the US Open.”

McIlroy also hinted he was feeling the pace of playing his fourth event in a row, but he is confident he will be fit and ready for his opening tee shot at 8.35am on Thursday.

“I feel okay,” he added “I hit quite a few good shots out there today, but a few loose ones as well. I’ll try to rest up again tonight and makes sure I’m fresh and ready for tomorrow.

“I’ll be good to go. There wasn’t much adrenaline in the body today, but once I step onto the first tee and get a card in my hand, it will be different.”

McIlroy took part in the pre-tournament pro-am in a group with One Direction singer Niall Horan, who caddied for him in the par-three contest at the Masters, and former Manchester United stars Paul Scholes and Phil Neville.

United fan McIlroy added: “It’s their day, I wanted the boys to enjoy themselves out there, especially Scholsey and Phil. They probably get enough football chat, so we probably chatted more about golf.

“It was really good fun. It’s always good to play with guys like that who have a real interest in the game as well.”
