McIlroy defends round with Trump

Rory McIlroy has released a statement explaining why he agreed to play a round of golf with American president Donald Trump.

The Northern Irishman recently took to the golf course with new American President Trump and copped a fair amount of criticism for it on social media.

In justifying his decision to tee it up with Trump, McIlroy posted the following statement on Twitter:

This comes after South African legend Ernie Els also played with Trump. Els was also forced to defend his actions.

“A lot of my own friends were not for him [Trump],” Els said.

“They kind of needled me a little bit, saying I was a suck-up. I just said, ‘Go eff yourself. I played with the president and you haven’t.’ You can’t please everybody.”

While Trump’s values might be questionable to many, Els said his golf was of a very high standard.

“President Trump is a golfer,” Els added.

“He swings the golf club properly, hits iron shots properly. He’s a proper golfer.”
