Injury-hit McIlroy rules himself out until March

Rory McIlroy says the WGC event in Mexico at the beginning of March would be the "perfect time" to return from injury.

The Northern Irishman, who has won four majors, has a stress fracture of his rib and won't be available for the Dubai Desert Classic which takes place next week.

While he has now confirmed he will also miss the Genesis Open in California and the Honda Classic in Florida with his return likely to come in Mexico just over a month from now.

"I can't even run at the minute because if my feet hit the ground hard at all, the vibration in my rib cage sort of hurts," McIlroy told Shane Bacon's The Clubhouse podcast.

"I'd like to sort of ease my way in gently, so Mexico is the perfect time to return.

"It's four rounds, there's no cut, I can see how everything feels. I have a week off after that, so all signs point toward Mexico being the one where I could come back and be 100 per cent comfortable. Hopefully it works out that way."
