Stenson on fire at The Open

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson fired a superb six-under-par 65 in the second round to lie just one shot behind American Phil Mickelson at The 145th Open Championship on Friday.

Stenson, who was a morning starter, sits at nine under, his lowest round in 12 Opens, behind Mickelson who shot a two-under 69 for a total of 132.

The Swede’s round consisted of seven birdies on the third, fourth, fifth and seventh, and a dropped shot on the par-five ninth hole. He followed that up with birdies on the 10th, 13th and 16th holes for his six-under round and will be hoping to keep that up in order to win his first major.

Mickelson scored birdies on the fourth, seventh and eighth holes and followed that up on the back nine with a birdie on the 14th but bogeyed the 12th and 15th holes for his round of 69.

“The conditions made it tough, the rain and then the wind,” said Mickelson after his round. “It became obviously more difficult, but I enjoy that challenge.”

Tied for third spot are Keegan Bradley and Soren Kjeldsen both shooting three-under 68s.

Defending champion Zach Johnson is fifth at five under after shooting a two-under 69.

The likes of Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy and many other players are still out on the course having started much later in the day.
