04:51 It’s been a truly enthralling US Grand Prix!  Thank you for your pleasant company today, and we’ll be back next weekend to keep you updated for that particular event.  Until then, do take it easy, and we’ll be back soon!  Bye for now.

04:48 Here’s the top ten for you, except that Verstappen and Raikkonen should be swapped around.

04:45 Verstappen is under investigation for possibly leaving the track to pass Raikkonen.  In fact, he is handed a five-second penalty, which means that Kimi Raikkonen is P3!  Meanwhile, Mercedes are World Constructor’s Championship for the fourth time in a row!

04:42 Hamilton has been serene out front, he’s across the line, he wins!  Vettel is P2, while Verstappen passes Raikkonen at the last gasp to finish P3!

04:37 Some images of the late action at the front.  Verstappen is hunting Raikkonen for the podium now.

04:32 A bit of drama between the backmarkers, but no harm done to Vettel, who launches his Ferrari around the outside into Turn One and passes Bottas for P3! Raikkonen lets his teammate past for P2.  Verstappen is past Bottas as well!

04:27 Sainz is looking to get past Ocon, but the Force India is still holding firm.  Vettel is only a second behind Bottas now…

04:22 Vettel is showing impressive pace and is 5.3 seconds behind Bottas.

04:17 Vettel and Verstappen are the fastest cars on track righ now, but with ground to make up.  Raikkonen is still stuck behind Bottas. No he isn’t!  The Red Finn attacks and pulls off a sterling move!  He’s up to P2!  Ice on Fire!

04:10 Verstappen, who was only 2 seconds behind Raikkonen, has pitted for supersofts, in a bit of an odd decision.  The Dutchman is informed “you know what we’re up to, it’s going to be a big lap”.  The Dutchman obliges with some rapid sectors, and Vettel pits for supersofts! The German just stays ahead of the Red Bull!

04:05 Sainz attacks!  Perez fights back!  They’re side by side through the late section of the lap!  Sainz is through, that’s P7!  Top class racing by the pair!  Meanwhile. Verstappen has slowly but surely crept up to within four seconds of Raikkonen, who is in turn on the tail of Bottas!

04:00 Nothing to separate the top teams in the pits, as it should be.  Perez has asked to be let by Ocon again, but the reply is negative, and Carlos Sainz is now within a second of the Mexican.

03:55 Verstappen is showing good pace on his softs and is six seconds behind Raikkonen.  Meanwhile, Perez, P8, has told Force India that Ocon, P7, needs to pick up the pace.  The Frenchman attacks Massa, P6, but the Brazilian holds firm before pitting anyway.

03:50 Verstappen has pitted and taken on softs.  The Dutchman is P5, 10 seconds behind Raikkonen.  Meanwhile, Alonso has pitted with engine problems, and his day is done.  Terrible fortune for the Spaniard, who was running in the top ten!

03:45 It’s all settled down at the front now, Verstappen is P2 but is still extending his stint on the supersofts he started on.

03:40 Bottas pits for Mercedes.  It’s all nice and smooth and the Finn is out on a set of soft tyres.  Vettel has set a new fastest lap.  Now, in comes Hamilton!  Mercedes know their business and he’s off without a hiccup, just ahead of Vettel! Poor Ricciardo, he was really zipping along before his unfortunate end!

03:35 Disaster for Ricciardo!  The Red Bull’s engine has let go, and he pulls off the circuit!  What a tragedy for the Australian, he was looking so racy! Meanwhile, Vettel has pitted and after a smooth stop he’s out on a set of softs.  One stop incoming?

03:30 Ricciardo is first of the frontrunners to pit, after taking some pressure from Raikkonen.  The Honey Badger is out in P9. He’s showing strong pace on a new set of supersofts, but can he really make them last to the end?  Is the Red Bull man planning two stops?

03:25 Verstappen has swept past Ocon for P6, but the Dutchman has some work to do to bridge the 8-second gap to Raikkonen in P5.  Hamilton has extended his lead to over 3 seconds.

03:20 Hamilton attacks Vettel at the end of the straight, he’s up the inside, and he leads again! He’s informed by Mercedes that he is on “Plan A”.  The Briton now leads by two seconds. Meanwhile, Verstappen has progressed up to P7.

03:15 Nico Hulkenberg has retired his Renault, capping off a difficult weekend for the German.  Hamilton is staying within a second of Vettel, but will he launch an attack? Ricciardo continues to shadow Bottas, who is 0.8 tenths a lap slower than the two leaders.

03:10 Vettel leads by a second from Hamilton.  Verstappen has made his way up to P10, while Raikkonen has passed Ocon for P5.  Bottas, in P3, is dropping back from the two leaders.  Ricciardo launches his car up the inside at Turn One, but Bottas holds firm again.  Those two are certainly getting cozy… Some images of the start for you.

03:05 Here come the lights, and they are on, on, on, on, on, off!  GO! A smooth start for all!  Vettel attacks Hamilton!  The Briton covers him!  Vettel holds firm and is in front, the Ferrari leads! Bottas is P3, with Ricciardo behind him! The Australian and the Finn go wheel to wheel, but it’s Bottas who stays ahead!

03:00 They’re all lined up, it’s time for the formation lap, and Hamilton leads them around.  No obvious drama for anybody.

02:52 It’s a lovely, clear day in Austin, which should make for a straight fight all through the grid.  We should expect either a one-stop or a two-stop race.

02:45 The drivers are being announced by legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer, and the crowd are lapping it up!

02:40 No shortage of drivers have tasted podium success here at COTA.  Will we see a new face join the list today?

02:35 The gladiators have been paraded before the crowd, and it seems a fine day to perform heroic feats of motor racing indeed.

02:30 30 minutes to the start.  The good news for Hamilton is that he enjoys a bit of a love affair with racing in the USA…

02:25 Nobody needs reminding how critical this race is for the title battle, but here are the most important permutations.  If Hamilton should prevail, he would become only the fifth driver in the sport’s history to win at least four titles.  The others are title rival Sebastian Vettel (four), Alain Prost (four), Juan Manuel Fangio (five) and Michael Schumacher, who did the business seven times.  Illustrious company indeed.

02:20 Of course, we have a new race starter in the form of Brendon Hartley, who is doing duty for Toro Rosso this weekend.  The New Zealander makes his F1 debut 50 years after compatriot Denny Hulme became world champion.

02:15 Meanwhile, despite qualifying in the top ten, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will start at the back due to an engine penalty.  Teammate Daniel Ricciardo was pretty cheerful about his prospects for the race, so perhaps it isn’t all doom and gloom for the Dutchman, provided he can stay out of trouble.

02:10 The Mercedes man, who is already the sport’s all-time leader in terms of pole positions, broke another record with his fine lap, securing the 117th front-row start of his career, one more than the great Michael Schumacher, who managed the feat 116 times.

02:05 Yesterday, it was Lewis Hamilton who rocked and rolled his way to a 72nd career pole position, leaving Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari 0.239 seconds in the shade.
