00:08 Thank you for joining us for a crucial FP3!  We’ll be back at 00:50 to cover Qualifying for you.  Please do join us for that, and until then, take it easy.  By for now.

00:05 Here’s the sharp end of the order for you:

01:00 And that’s it for FP3!  It’s a Mercedes-Ferrari-Mercedes-Ferrari arrangement, with Lewis Hamilton leading the way!  Verstappen is P5 for Red Bull, with Massa P6 for Williams.

00:55 We’re into the final few minutes now.  One driver we won’t be seeing again this session is Daniil Kvyat, whose Toro Rosso is firmly stuck in its garage.

00:50 No surprise, given the sheer speed of these 2017 cars, but Hamilton’s attempt is the fastest ever seen around this circuit.

00:45 The drivers are on their qualifying simulation runs, and Vettel jumps to the top of the charts, before Hamilton pips him by a tenth.  Bottas is two tenths adrift of the Briton, with Kimi Raikkonen half a tenth behind his fellow Finn.  0.277 seconds covers the top four cars, with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen half a second back.

00:40 Meanwhile, here’s the order for you at this point in time.  A fair margin between the two top teams and the rest of the pack.  Fernando Alonso, surely an American favourite after his impressive Indy500 effort earlier this year, has done well to manage P6.

00:35 Oh no!  Romain Grosjean has gotten it all wrong at turn 7 and beached his Haas in the gravel!  The Frenchman’s language over the radio is…colourful, but it’s all to no avail and he clambers out of the car.  That’s that for Grosjean, and the Virtual Safety Car is out until the stricken Haas is recovered.

00:27 Vettel has split the Mercedes pair, ahead of Bottas by 0.002 seconds, but still over four tenths shy of Hamilton.  Positions two to four are covered by only 0.0015 seconds, but Hamilton is firmly in charge for the moment.

00:22 The Mercedes pair have come to the fore for the moment, with Hamilton a fair margin clear at the top.

00:17 Vettel goes top, but he’s swiftly pipped by Daniel Ricciardo, before Kimi Raikkonen goes faster still, lowering the benchmark to a 1.35.562.

00:12 Carlos Sainz has jumped to the top on a 1.37.125 for Renault, with teammate Nico Hulkenberg half a second down.  No rush to hit the track from our championship leader though, who, by the way, has reverted to a more familiar helmet design.

00:07 Toro Rosso new boy Brendon Hartley is the first to set a time, a 1.41.499.

00:00 The light turns green, it’s time for FP3! The US public are here and ready, and they don’t have to wait long as Sebastian Vettel is straight out in his Ferrari.

23:53 Good weather for this session, which will allow the teams to get straight into their work…

23:45 15 minutes to the start.  We’re doing battle around a relatively flowing Austin circuit, which plays to the strengths of the Silver cars.  For Ferrari, this is a big session ahead of the all important Qualifying session later on.

23:40 Meanwhile, Max Verstappen shocked the paddock this week by announcing that he’d extended his Red Bull contract to the end of 2020.  Some thought that the 20-year old would seek a move to Ferrari or Mercedes in the near future, but he seems to be content at the Austrian team for the time being.

23:35 Lewis Hamilton led the way for Mercedes in FP2, which will set him up nicely as he attempts to wrap up his fourth world title this weekend.
