How Free Practice One in China unfolded

Relive all the action from the first practice session from Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.

11:35 – Join us again in two hours for free practice two.

11:30 – Well that’s it, a session interrupted twice ends with Rosberg leading the way. While there might not have been that much action on track, there were certainly plenty of talking points.

11:26 – With only a handful of laps under his belt, how will Alonso prove his fitness?

11:23 – Good news at last!

11:21 – Not much that can be done but wait for the action to get going again…

11:18 – There are a few theories doing the rounds…

11:15 – The track inspection is continuing. This is obviously a huge safety issue so the FIA are taking their time over it. We won’t see any cars on track until they know for sure that there is no issue with the tyres in general.

11:09 – The FIA’s Jo Bauer is over at the Williams garage getting an explanation on what is going on. Button is told that this is likely a problem for Williams and no one else. His pitwall reckons Massa’s failures were down to tyre rub while Magnussen got caught out in the debris. Interesting times.

11:05 – Bad news over at Haas, as Gutierrez will not be seen this session due to an “electrical issue with the car.” He is definitely getting the bulk of Haas’ bad luck this season.

11:00 – We’ve got our second red flag of the session as there is a ton of debris on track after Magnussen’s puncture.

10:58 – Massa’s left rear goes again! It looks like the floor is causing the problem, but now Kevin Magnussen’s Renault has suffered the same fate. Is this a Pirelli issue? A bit worrying.

10:54 – The Manor’s are flying first up in China!

10:51 – We’ve passed the halfway point of the session and this is how things stand…

10:47 – Rio Haryanto is the first man back on track.

10:43 – We’re in a bit of a lull, and here’s an update from Williams on Massa’s issue:

10:38 – Hamilton has spun for a second time at Turn 11, and he sends a concerned message through to his team:

10:33 – As the session gets back underway, here’s a humorous look at Daniel Ricciardo…

10:30 – The clean-up continues as Massa is in the garage, giving Rob Smedley a rather animated breakdown of what happened.

10:27 – A bit of a lull at the VSC has been upgraded to a red flag.

10:25 – The virtual safety car is out to clear some of the debris from the Massa incident.

10:21 – Here’s what Williams had to say about that…

This could be reason for concern for Pirelli.

10:19 – “Something broke on the car” is the word from Felipe Massa as he gingerly makes his way back to the pit after a nervous moment at turn five. He looks like the tyre has come off the rim. He’s lucky that wasn’t worse.

10:16 – Yellow flags for a moment as Hamilton has a spin after his hot lap, and he’s back in the pits.

10:13 – Tyres are going to be key, and Ferrari have reminded us what options are on offer:

10:11 – No surprises here as Hamilton and Rosberg lead the way early on

10:09 – New engines this weekend for Sebastian Vettel, who didn’t make the start grid in Bahrain, and Jenson Button, who suffered a failure on lap 7 of the Sakhir race.

10:07 – Only Alonso, Perez, Palmer and Button have yet to venture out. Take Alonso off that list as there he goes in his MP4-31.

10:05 – All eyes are on Alonso at the moment. Will the Spaniard race on Sunday? Let’s hope so.

10:00 – And we’re underway!

09:59 – Good news courtesy of Force India:

9:57 – Before the action kicks off, familiarise yourself with the Shanghai International Circuit

9:52 – Rio Haryanto has reason to feel confident this weekend…

9:47 – It’s good news for Fernando Alonso, and everyone really (except perhaps not Stoffel Vandoorne), with the McLaren driver cleared to take part in FP1 after which he’ll be assessed by the FIA doctors once more after missing the Bahrain GP due to the injuries he suffered in a big crash in Australia.

9:45 – In case you missed it, the first piece of big news from China is that Lewis Hamilton has taken a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. You can read all about that here.

9:40 – Hello and welcome to our live coverage of free practice one ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.
