World Cup Team Preview: Peru

Peru

Peru are making their return to the World Cup in Russia after a mammoth 36-year absence.

The South American country last played at the 1982 tournament in Spain.

They were one of the teams that were in contention to clinch the last two automatic qualification places from the South American region, but dropped points against Colombia while other results did not go their way and were forced into the play-offs with New Zealand.

Peru won the subsequent games 2-0 on aggregate to make a return to the global showpiece.

The side are managed by former Argentina striker Ricardo Gareca, who has been in charge of the team since 2015.

Gareca’s charges looked to be headed to the World Cup without their captain, Paolo Guerrero after he was given a doping ban. However, the influential striker has been given the green light to participate at the tournament in Russia after a Swiss tribunal agreed to temporarily lift his 14-month ban.

They will get their World Cup campaign up and running against Denmark on June 16 in Group C that also has France and Australia.
