Germany head coach Joachim Low expects FC Bayern München goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to recover in time to participate in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The captain of the reigning World Champions and the Confederation Cup Champions has not featured for the Bundesliga leaders in over three months now.
After undergoing surgery to correct a broken bone in his left foot, the former Schalke youth product has been on crutches and undergoing an intense rehabilitation program.
While Neuer himself has spoken of his desire and confidence to gain match fitness for the tournament, Low has weighed in on the debate over whether they should risk the 31-year-old.
“The plan is that he can train sometime in February, March, that he certainly needs more time [to recover],” he told Radio B5. “He is the best keeper in the world, our captain and we absolutely need him.”
Neuer holds an incredible record of 169 clean sheets in 346 Bundesliga games.
