Manchester United are set for a summer overhaul, with several first-team stars heading for the exit. As a result, the Red Devils are expected to heavily invest in a new squad, as they go looking for their first title since 2013. However, the Old Trafford outfit has been linked with some surprising names, including one from across the Atlantic.
According to Goal, Manchester United sent scouts to watch DC United’s Luciano Acosta in action. The 24-year-old Argentine, however, had a less than impressive outing, as his side were beaten four-nil by Los Angeles FC.
Meanwhile, the DC midfielder himself confirmed that he was watched by the English Premier League outfit while also lamenting his own performance.
“I’m obviously happy [United] were here,” said Acosta.
“They came to see me, and obviously I just went out and tried my best.
“Today wasn’t my day, we were up against a great opponent and in reality, I’m just sad for the group’s performance today, and mine too.”
The Argentine has been attracting interest from other European clubs as well. Paris Saint-Germain were reported to be closing in on a deal for him during the winter transfer window, only for it to break down at the last moment.
Meanwhile, Acosta’s current contract with DC United runs until the end of 2019, which means that he could leave the club on a ‘free’ during the transfer window.
FOX Sports Asia Probability Rating: 1/5; The case of Acosta is a curious one. The 24-year-old central midfielder is relatively unknown across the Atlantic. And yet, he has been scouted by several big European clubs, including PSG, who nearly signed him in January.
If Manchester United do end up making a move for Acosta, it could turn out to be a shrewd one. The Argentine midfielder racked up some impressive stats in the 2018 season and could be available for a free transfer.
