Manchester United will be bidding adieu to a club great next summer after they chose not to renew Antonio Valencia’s contract. The winger-turned-full back was a predominant figure in the team over the last ten years and is sure to leave behind a big hole. However, the Red Devils have identified a player who they believe can replace him seamlessly.
Earlier this month, Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed uncertainty over the future of club captain Antonio Valencia. The Ecuadorian fullback had run down his contract with the club to its final few months, with an extension seemingly unlikely.
Valencia himself appeared to confirm these reports later when he used social media to send a strong message to the Manchester United supporters.
While the Red Devils are yet to officially confirm Valencia’s departure, reports from the Mirror suggest that they are already in search of replacements.
One name which has popped up is that of AC Milan youngster Davide Calabria, who is enjoying a fine season under Gennaro Gattuso after breaking through the first team during the latter part of last season. The Twenty-two year old has twenty-six games under his belt for the season and is ever-present in the right-back position for the Rossoneri.
Meanwhile, Manchester United already have a ready replacement for Valencia in Diogo Dalot, after the Portuguese was signed from Porto last summer. Nevertheless, the club continues to be linked with Calabria as they look to double up on right-backs.
