Benitez’s side looked to be heading for a comfortable home win after racing into a 2-0 lead after 63 minutes played thanks to goals from Marek Hamsik and Gonzalo Higuain.
However, Inter produced a late fightback to earn a share of the spoils through goals from Rodrigo Palacio and Mauro Icardi.
“We played a great game,” Benitez told his club’s official website. “It was a good performance from my players.
“It’s not easy to play every three days but I saw the right approach to the game by my players.
“I want that same focus in our next games, we need to give continuity to this performance.”
Napoli dominated the encounter at the San Paolo stadium and had seven shots on goal but could only find the net twice.
“Considering how we played, we deserved the win,” Benitez said. “We created so many chances and we should have killed the game earlier.
“But my players did what I asked them to do.
“It’s just a pity we couldn’t control our lead better.
“We are disappointed not to have won but we gave everything from the start.”
Benitez admitted his former club Inter were worthy opponents.
“You have to give merit to Inter,” the Spaniard said. “They played a good game too.
“They had nothing to lose and sent men forward.
“They have players that can make the difference and they took advantage of their potential.”
Napoli have won just one of their last four league games and are third in the standings, three points clear of Lazio, who host Fiorentina on Monday.
Benitez’s side host Dinamo Moscow in Thursday’s Europa League last 16 first leg before taking on Hellas in Verona three days later in Serie A.
