Fiorentina captain Astori passes away aged 31

Fiorentina captain and Italy international Davide Astori has died at the age of 31 following a “sudden illness”.

The Italian international passed away on Sunday morning at the hotel where the club where staying prior to Sunday’s Serie A match with Udinese.

Reports suggest Astori died in his sleep and as a result of the tragedy, all of Sunday’s Serie A games have been postponed as a show of respect.

A statement from Fiorentina read: “Fiorentina is deeply saddened to announce that our captain Davide Astori has passed away, after suffering a sudden illness.

“For this terrible and delicate situation, and above all out of respect for his family, we appeal to the sensitivity of the media.”

A former AC Milan centre-back, Astori also played for Cagliari and enjoyed loan spells with Roma and Fiorentina before making his move to Florence a permanent one in 2016.

In total the Fiorentina captain had been capped 14 times by Italy.

Messages of condolences have been pouring in from all over the world following news of his passing.
