Empoli twice battled from a goal down to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw with AC Milan at Stadio Carlo Castellani on Saturday evening.
Empoli 2 AC Milan 2
Bacca opens the scoring
Zielinski nets first equaliser
Bonaventura has Milan back in front
Maccarone taps home to seal draw
It looked as though AC Milan would ease their way to victory when Carlos Bacca had them ahead very early on.
It would not be the case, however, has Piotr Zielinski had Empoli back on level terms midway through the first half.
Giacomo Bonaventura had Milan back in front shortly after the start of the second half, but Massimo Maccarone once again restored parity to earn Empoli a share of the spoils.
It took just eight minutes for Milan to take the lead when Bacca latched onto Luca Antonelli’s pass to slot home with a tidy finish in just the eighth minute.
Empoli thought they had the equaliser on the half-hour mark, but Maccarone was caught offside from the free kick, but was adamant that he had not touched the ball.
They did restore parity just two minutes later, however, when Riccardo Saponara played Zielinski through on goal, the midfielder making no mistake slotting through the legs of Milan stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Milan were back in front soon after the restart when a failed clearance smacked off M’Baye Niang’s head and fell nicely for Bonaventura, who slotted home calmly in the 48th minute.
Empoli were not willing to settle for a defeat and were back on level terms just after the hour mark when Maccarone tapped home the rebound after Manuel Pucciarelli had an initial effort saved.
