Salah: We don’t fear City, or any rival

Mohamed Salah has played down the task facing Liverpool in their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, claiming the Reds fear no opponent.

City’s only league defeat to date this season came in a 4-3 loss at Anfield, which saw Salah get on the scoresheet. A few blemishes aside, Pep Guardiola’s side has looked just about unbeatable, but the winger has not forgotten Liverpool’s January triumph over them.

“I don’t believe that City have always been superior to other clubs this season in the Premier League – despite what everyone says,” Salah said. “We have beaten them for a start.

“The Champions League always depends on the draw, but we don’t fear any rival, whoever they are.

“We’re in the quarter-finals and have the same chances of winning as each of the other seven teams.

“There are many big clubs still in the competition, but you have to remember Liverpool are a great club in Europe too. In these knockout ties, anything can happen.”

The teams will square off at Anfield on 4 April, and then at the Etihad Stadium six days later.

Meanwhile, Salah has moved a significant step closer to securing the European Golden Shoe after his four-goal haul against Watford over the weekend took his goal tally for the season to an incredible 28 in just 30 matches.

That puts the Egyptian maestro on 56 points, six clear of second-placed Lionel Messi, who also scored in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Messi has won the European Golden Boot four times – including last season – and currently sits on 25 goals from 28 La Liga games.

That’s three goals less than Salah, although Messi still has nine League games left this season, while Salah only has seven.

The duo aren’t the only ones in line for the prize either. There are three strikers who share third place on 48 points and 24 goals – Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani, Lazio’s Ciro Immobile and Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

If Messi does pip Salah to the honour, he will become the first man to win it five times. He is currently level with Cristiano Ronaldo on four Golden Shoes.
