Match-winner Bernardo Silva has revealed that Chelsea were never going to influence Manchester City’s style of play with their defensive tactics on Sunday.
Silva netted the winning goal for Pep Guardiola’s side just seconds after half-time as the hosts eased to comfortable 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium, which featured a Blues team that struggled to cause them problems.
The Premier League title holders attempted a more direct, counter-attacking approach, but were unable to stop City from playing their normal free-flowing game.
“Chelsea can play the way they want,” Silva was quoted as saying by the Independent. “We knew it could be a possibility and when the game started we had to adapt to it and then play our game.
“We always try to control the game, to play offensive football, to create chances and score goals. Fortunately tonight we won three more points and now we have to think about the next one.
“We knew we knew we had to be patient because when you play against a team as defensive and as strong on the counter-attack as Chelsea, you have to be patient.
“You have to control their main players and that’s what we did. Fortunately we got three more points and we’re closer to the title.”
