Benitez distances himself from Everton job

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has distanced himself from reports that he could be a target for managerless Everton.

Benitez has enjoyed a successful start to the season at Newcastle, with the newly-promoted Magpies lying in seventh spot heading into this weekend’s fixtures.

Despite Benitez’s Liverpool allegiances, speculation has suggested that the Spaniard’s job at Newcastle could prompt Everton to move for his services.

But while his family still live in the north west of England, the former Real Madrid boss has indicated that he still has a job to do at Newcastle.

“I read in the press and heard people talking, but I am happy here. I am concentrating on this, I don’t like to talk about rumours,” said Benitez.

“The reality, obviously, is that my family is in Liverpool, but my past was Liverpool [Football Club]. Everton is a great club.

“I’m not saying I’m interested, I’m saying I’m happy here and want to concentrate on Newcastle and try to do my best here.”

Benitez could become even more content at Newcastle, if a takeover of the club is completed by Dubai-based businesswoman Amanda Staveley.
