Southampton dominated the contest from the opening stages but couldn’t finish in the final third despite Tadic and Yoshida coming close.
Sofiane Boufal eventually scored the winner in the 85th minute with a fantastic run that saw him beat two defenders before coming inside and curling a great effort into the back of the net.
Southampton deployed a different formation playing two upfront with a midfield diamond, and it looked to be working as they had the better start as Ryan Bertrand looked promising breaking down the left flank.
17 minutes in, Bertrand made another good break down the left side this time and he crossed well for Dusan Tadic who hit his shot straight at Ben Foster.
Oriol Romeu then had a go when a corner saw the ball fall to him in the six-yard box but he dragged the effort wide as Southampton continued to apply pressure.
West Brom continued to sit deep and Virgil van Dijk had a chance to carry the ball up and eventually decided to have a shot from 30 yards out. He struck it well but the ball flew over the top corner.
Manolo Gabbiadini then made a great break down and played the ball to Shane Long who was well placed but couldn’t finish the effort and West Brom survived.
Just before half time, again Saints had a chance as Steven Davies bent in a great cross for Maya Yoshida who forced a good save out of Foster. From the resulting corner, Yoshida has another chance as he attempted an overhead kick but couldn’t put it on target.
Southampton went into half time feeling frustrated as they struggled to finish their chances despite West Brom giving them lots of space to create chances.
West Brom continued their defensive display but looked to add an additional attacking option as they introduced Gareth McAuley for Gareth Barry.
Foster came to West Brom’s aid again as he rushed out quickly to save an attempt from Tadic who was unmarked in the area and the goalkeeper brought him down but no penalty was given.
Almost out of nowhere, Nacer Chadli tested Fraser Forster from outside the box and forced him to tip the effort over the bar.
Southampton eventually got their breakthrough with five minutes left in superb fashion. Sofiane Boufal made a fantastic break beating two players before cutting inside, and curling a superb effort into the far corner to give Saints a deserved lead.
In added time, Boufal again made a good break and fed the ball to Charlie Austin who managed to beat Foster but hit the post. Yet, Saints claimed all three points against a tight West Brom side.
