Full report

Liverpool struggled to create many clear openings in the first half with Daniel Sturridge struggling in attack, until being taken off in the 61st minute.

However, there were some positives as debutant Robertson showed fine form at left-back, and it was his cross in the first half that found Matip, who nodded wide of an empty net after Wayne Hennessey had missed his outswinging cross.

The Eagles were showing improved defensive resilience having lost their first Premier League game 3-0 to newly-promoted Huddersfield Town, and could have gone 1-0 up in the second half but Christian Benteke missed a golden opportunity.

After Ruben Loftus-Cheek had done brilliantly to break into the right channel inside the Reds box past his marker, his pull back found the Belgium star but he blazed over from 10 yards out when anything on target would likely have led to a goal.

Palace would pay the price when a defensive error from Luka Milivojevic saw the ball break to Mane in front of goal, and he poked the ball past Hennessey in the 73rd minute.

Jurgen Klopp's men had further half chances to add to their lead, but were largely content to collect the three points at Anfield.
